JesterZ Improv Theater
Mesa, AZ 85201
What if I'm not funny? Do I need to be funny?
In fact, first day we'll ask EVERYONE in the class to stop TRYING to be funny. The funny will happen.
We'll explore how HAVING FUN will assist in BEING FUNNY. We work on the FUNNY TOGETHER!
Beginning improv is all about the fundamentals of improv. Improv by definition is NOT: Be funny. It means to create in the moment, often with funny results. So, don't worry, we'll do this TOGETHER.
Level 3 is when we'll actually WORK on the COMEDY part. We'll focus on COMEDY TECHNIQUES once we have the fundamentals down.
Do the classes teach "clean comedy"?
We are firmly, 100%, absolutely clean comedy. Even in our classes and around the theater.
JesterZ Improv Theater is free of swearing, vulgarity, off-colored topics or foul content on AND off stage.
Follow up question: WHY? Comedy is not just "SHOCK & AWE" with swearwords as a punchline or an inappropriate action or dialogue with an uncomfortable and unbelievable "I can't believe you just said that".
No matter what you ultimately end up doing with what you learn from us, you'll have the intellectual acumen to deliver GOOD, QUALITY COMEDY that will get you the corporate gig, the church function, the school assembly and more.
When you have the skills to "keep it clean" and STILL make people laugh - YOU'VE GOT SKILLS!!!
What does a typical class outline of activities look like?
Each class is taught by one of our main stage performers. Someone with the experience ON STAGE to help you understand the fundamentals of improv.
We begin class with warm up and connection activities. Fun "improv games" that warm up the brain, get your brain/creativity moving like Grab Bag of Stuff. Or it may be a fun "get connected to your partner or team" activity.
From there, we'll workout the focus for the night. For instance, how do you start a scene? We'll run activities that focus and drill down on that topic.
If the focus calls for it, we'll use a performance improv game to practice for the showcase.
How many levels are there?
There are a total of 4 levels.
Level 1 is beginning improv techniques, learning the basics.
Level 2 is Character Development, learning how to bring fun and authentic characters to your scenes.
Level 3 is Comedy Techniques, Story-telling and Patterns
Level 4 is Performance prep for those wanting to take this to the performance level.
At any time during any level you can join us for Games class, learning the fun games you see in our shows and in the showcases you'll perform in.
How do I become a Main Stage Jester?
We typically pull our performers directly from our performance prep class and place them in our understudy program. So we encourage you to hit all the classes and learn the JesterZ-style of improv so that you connect fully with the team, when that time comes.
On occassion, we'll hold AUDITIONS to find new talent that's been trained elsewhere. However, we'll still place you through a portion of the training to ensure you are the right fit. Sign up for the NEWSLETTER to be kept in the loop for auditions.
